Alas, my three choices are:
Blink, by Malcolm Gladwell. I've heard oodles about this (and his many others). Here, a blurb from Goodreads:
2. A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, Dave Eggers. I've wanted to read this biographical account for quite some time, particularly as it is pertinent to the DISCO project I'm involved with in Woodlawn. If you have some spare time and want to invest in helping kids in Woodlawn get better at and fall in love with writing, let me know. There's that and here's a description of the book:
The literary sensation of the year, a book that redefines both family and narrative for the twenty-first century. A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius is the moving memoir of a college senior who, in the space of five weeks, loses both of his parents to cancer and inherits his eight-year-old brother. Here is an exhilarating debut that manages to be simultaneously hilarious and wildly inventive as well as a deeply heartfelt story of the love that holds a family together.
3. 29 Gifts: How a Month of Giving Can Change Your Life. This one is a two-fold project. If it wins, my vote is that we both read it and implement it's challenge to give likewise for the month. I think it could give depth to our conversation as we talk about how our giving actually affected our attitudes. I have a friend who did it. Read about it here and read about the original project here. The description:
At age thirty-five, Cami Walker was burdened by a battle with multiple sclerosis, a chronic neurological condition that made it difficult for her to walk, work, or enjoy her life. Seeking a remedy for her depression after being hospitalized, she received an uncommon prescription from an African medicine woman: Give to others for 29 days.29 Gifts is the insightful story of the author’s life change as she embraces and reflects on the naturally reciprocal process of giving and receiving. Many of Walker’s gifts were simple —a phone call, spare change, a Kleenex. Yet the acts were transformative. By Day 29, not only had Walker’s health and happiness improved, but she had created a worldwide giving movement.
The book also includes personal essays from others whose lives changed for the better by giving, plus pages for the reader to record their own journey. More than a memoir, 29 Gifts offers inspiring lessons on how a simple daily practice of altruism can dramatically alter your outlook on the world.
Go on and get your votes in. How's about we aim to meet May 18? I'm out of town the following week, so if not then, could we meet at the beginning of June? If we did that, we could have icebox cake, as my birthday is actually in June. Booyah.

yep. definitely the first to vote...oh, man, i can't wait til i have better things to do in life than stare at a computer screen all day...
anyway, my vote is for blink.
and i wouldn't be able to meet in june, so i vote for may 18. but if june works out the best for everyone else, go for it!
ps. great choices! it was hard to choose...really, i'd be happy reading any of them.
ok so of course im the second one to vote - being at a computer MOST of the day. my vote is for the 29 gifts. i like a good challenge and i think it would be so great to hear what else everyone is doing and it would give us a chance to share our experiences and get to know each other on a deeper level which i love. so yeah. awesome choices cory.
Oh and ALSO, i know in previous summers we have "taken time off" our usual assigned books for casual reading. we mentioned at Christmas how we might do a book swap for the summer. just wanted to know if we still wanted to do that, and if so, if we should bring some of our favorite books to this next book club so we can do the swap. if we do, i say we dont limit how many books we bring or take. we just might have to duke out a few of them until we meet in july to swap again.
I'm sure they would all be great reads but in an effort to be decisive I pick Blink. And rest assured fellow blue stockings, despite my current location, I plan to stay as committed to our club as ever :)
My pick is A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius! I've read the preface, and it's really great so far. They're all great picks, though!
Also, I'm not sure I'm up to speed with the summer book swap idea - would we trade in pairs or just all contribute to one big pile and then scratch and bite our way to the ones we want? If it's the latter, maybe we could sell tickets to the general public and make a little money.
(Just kidding on that last part, ha)
Who's left to vote? Anyone have a way to get in touch with the new members so we can go ahead and make a decision?
29!
oh so sorry guys that i've neglected to vote! it's a tough one... 29 gifts? i cant pick with one i'd rather read, so i'm judging the last book by it's cover.
